Established with a profound dedication to Carnatic music since 1980, Vamana Academy of Music stands as a beacon of traditional excellence. Founded by renowned percussion maestro Karnataka Kalashree Vidwan Mysore M. Gururaj in Mysore, the academy began its journey imparting expert training in Mridangam and Morsing. Though initially unnamed, it quickly gained recognition for nurturing talented disciples under Vidwan Gururaj’s masterful guidance.
In 1991, Vidwan Gururaj relocated to Mangalore, where he continued to train numerous students in Mridangam and Morsing while serving as a distinguished Staff Artist at All India Radio. His move to Bangalore in 2005 and later to Chennai in 2019 expanded the academy’s reach, with online classes ensuring uninterrupted learning for aspiring artists worldwide.
The academy received its auspicious name – Vamana Academy of Music – in 2022, bestowed by His Holiness Sri Satyatma Tirtharu of the revered Sri Uttaradi Matha, symbolizing divine blessings and a commitment to spiritual and artistic harmony.
Today, the legacy continues with Vidwan Gururaj’s son, Sumantha Mundargi, who teaches Carnatic Vocals and Flute, enriching the academy’s offerings.
